The best coaching advice I can give you.
1. Fitness is forever. Don't get caught up in short term unsustainable goals. Focus on long term fitness and health goals, and building sustainable habits for a healthier life in the long run.
2. Stop starting and stopping. Consistency is needed to see and feel results. Don't go all in on something then stop after a few weeks. Trust the process, and give it time. Don’t quit because you haven't seen instant results. It takes time. Start slowly, then build it into a consistent cadence you can stick to forever.
3. Get out of your own way. Most people who don't make progress, make lots of excuses. Work. Life. Tired. Busy. Promotion. Moving. Etc. It's about priorities. You either want to do something or you don't. Stop making excuses. There will always be something. Just start.
4. Get on top of your nutrition. If you’re looking to lose weight, focus on balance vs restriction. Carbs don't make you fat. Fat doesn't make you fat. Protein doesn't make you fat. Too much food makes you fat. Stop restricting food groups to lose weight. Focus on a calorie deficit instead if you’re looking to lose weight. You also can’t out-train a bad diet. So if you’re not seeing results or feeling your best (health, weight or energy wise) ask yourself if what you’re eating, be that overeating, undereating, or the quality of what you’re eating, is the problem. 1-2 weekly gym or personal training sessions can’t undo a whole week of poor nutrition (food and alcohol.)
5. Get out of your comfort zone. I have worked with many new clients on this. You need to try new things to progress. You won't like everything. Don't be scared of lifting weights. You need to in order to see strength gains, build strong healthy bones or to lose fat. For example, if you’re trying to build a strong fit body, but still lifting the same weights say after 6, 9 or 12 months later... then you're potentially wasting your time. Be brave. Try new things. And that includes new heavier weights and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone training wise.
6. Expect to not always be motivated. And understand not every session will be a good one. Or a strong one. It's normal. Just do the work and keep going. Consistency is needed, so tick it off and move on. You’re not always going to be motivated. The point is to do it anyway.
7. Be kind to yourself. Celebrate small wins. Success shouldn't just be a number on the scale. Give yourself credit for getting stronger, becoming more flexible, increasing your endurance or speed, feeling more energised, feeling more body confident, sleeping better, eating healthier etc. These are all success factors.
